Ingrid and I were both head cheerleaders for the Icelandic national Curling team. When my leg had to be amputated due to a horrible shark attack during half time, Ingrid visited me every day in the hospital and read the Babysitter’s Club series aloud to me while I wept. After that we became great friends.
I leave for L.A. tomorrow and here’s what I’ll be doing.
1. PLAYING A SHOW: As many of you west coasters know, I am very rarely out in your territory. In fact, this will be the second time I’ve ever played there. So please come out to the show so I can come back many many many many many more times. Also I heard it’s going to rain the whole time that I’m there. I apologize for bringing the crappy New York weather with me.
Sunday January 24th @ 10pm sharp
143 N. La Brea Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036
2. THE ELLEN DEGENERES SHOW: I’ll be performing with Ingrid Michaelson and the band on the show January 22nd. Go HERE to see when and where it’s on in your area.
3. MAKING A MUSIC VIDEO for my song, Yellow Bird. (EEEEE!!!! - the sound of excitement).
4. Enjoying not wearing a winter coat for a few days and hopefully experiencing that “sunshine” thing I’ve heard all about.
Some of the albums mentioned in this post were released way before 2009. These are the bands/albums that were significant to me personally. I wrote a WHOLE LOT. A lot more than I intended. Whatever. This is what you’re getting. Expect some more New Yearz related posts from me in the coming week. I tend to do that whole nostalgia thing…
Tegan & Sara - Multiple Albums - Duh. Sainthood ruled, If It Was You got cozy in my car stereo, The Con sounded great on vinyl, and So Jealous soundtracked almost every long drive that my brother and I took from show to show. They also make this list for being cool people in general. I know nothing about Sara, but Tegan is super nice and awesome and supportive even though she barely knows me at all. Thanks Tegan & Sara!
Jenny Owen Youngs - Transmitter Failure - I am not putting Jenny on here because she is my friend. I’m going to be honest. When I sent her a MySpace message about our future friendship, I had only listened to ”Fuck Was I” and ”Hot In Herre”. I was sold on this album by the end of the second song. It’s pretty perfect. Jenny is also on this list because she made me excited about being a singer/songwriter again and this record kind of opened my eyes to the fact that just because you’re a girl with guitar doesn’t mean your music can’t totally rock faces and melt hearts all at once. Aww.
Bess Rogers - Travel Back EP - This record opens with a pretty inspiring line. “You’ve got no reason to be unhappy, yeah you’ve got nothing to cry about.” If that’s not the most positive shit you’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is. Here’s the thing. I know everyone hates Bess Rogers, but I am not going to lie anymore. I fucking love the shit out of her and her music. As soon as I got this, I spent the whole week listening to it on repeat. It’s catchy and fun and it will help you win contests (Campus MusicFest 2009) if you make it the theme-record of your life.
Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers - I bought this record like two years ago and listened to it a couple times, liked it okay, and lent it to my friend Caroline. Obviously I didn’t care about it very much because she gave it back to me a year later and we just laughed about it. I popped it into my car stereo and proceeded to have my mind absolutely blown. This record is perfect in every way. I don’t want to make any crazy statements right now but if I had to choose one album to listen to for the rest of my life, this might be the one. I’m just saying.
The Avett Brothers - Emotionalism / Etc.. - I literally just discovered the Avett Brothers like a month ago, but I’ve had them stuck in my head ever since. Not sure why I never took the time to check them out before, but I’m thankful that they came into my life when they did. I’m choosing this album because it contains a lot of songs off of a mix CD I received. It’s the perfect soundtrack to a day spent lounging around with a smile on your face, which I intend to do a lot of in 2010.
